I have been thinking and struggling for long time, since day one when I started to write tasting notes, even until the moment I am writing this article- should I give some rating/ grading system to the wines and whiskies to give readers a clearer indication of my taste? Or should I just leave it out and only provide comments towards my reviews? After all the considerations, I decided to start giving points to the drinks as readers can quickly get the first impression on how I rate the drinks, and also know how my standard is. If you are the type who love to read more detail, please feel free to take a look on my notes.
However, there are a few things that have to be disclaimed beforehand:
Please do remember that all these ratings are my personal opinions. Please don’t take into account as a general fact of the product itself. It is fine if you want to use it as a guide but please do remember that it is from my sense and standard that may be differed from yours, even though I try my best to give unbiased opinions.
I do not encourage heavy alcoholic consumption. Please drink responsibly and do not drive after drinking any alcohol.
Please respect the other people’s work and copyright- kindly quote and give credits to me if you are sharing my articles or pictures, and vice versa so do I.
So now I can introduce my rating system with a full point of 100. I give points to the drinks based on aroma, taste and finish. If a drink is very aromatic but lack of intensity in taste or finish, then points will be lowered when comparing to a well-balanced drink that all three elements in tune.
100: Perfect and is a masterpiece. It is a classic. Nothing to complain. Balanced, complex, good structured, attractive aroma and palate, long finish. There is a ‘wow’ effect after tasting, and coming with more ‘wow’ ‘wow’ as time goes by. A lifelong unforgettable experience to taste it. It is basically a treasure and should try to find it even if price is a bit more expensive and more efforts are needed.
95-99: Almost perfect and extraordinary. Basically it’s also an unforgettable drink that you will remember for ages. You will feel amazed with the whole package of the drink in terms of body, complexity, balance, length and palate. You would enjoy so much and would love to encore after the first sip.
90-94: Excellent and delicious. It is outstanding with characters. It has potential to give out more. It is simply not just a drink, but to enjoy and to celebrate with. You should not regret to have a chance to taste it.
85-89: Very good and highly recommended. Nothing wrong with the drink and you should have them in your collection. You would not feel boring when enjoying them.
80-84: Good and recommended. It would be good to have a bottle at home to drink at times, and there is just a bit lacking of some elements to make it more perfect and score higher.
75-79: Above average but not complex enough to be recommended. It may be too straightforward and simple, lack of character or a bit too short in length.
70-74: Average drink. Simple and direct, nothing special or wrong about it. There is no excitement for this drink.
60-69: Still drinkable, but do not expect too much on the drink, perhaps it is diluted, short length or does not have attractive aroma/ taste.
50-59: I can still accept it to give a try, but no second time please!
Below 50: It is kind of disgusting drink. There must be something wrong with the drink- perhaps it is corked? I would suggest you to pour it away instead of your mouth, unless you just need some alcohol to sterilize yourselves! But I do not want to drink for the second sip please!
